Headaches are one of the main reasons patients first come to see Dr. Joe. Many headaches start in the neck and upper back, where tight muscles and stiff joints refer pain up into the head. Chiropractic care focuses on those sources.
Types of headaches we see
- Tension headaches: a band of pressure around the head, often tied to stress and posture
- Neck-related (cervicogenic) headaches: headaches that start in the neck and often get worse with certain neck movements
- Migraines: throbbing headaches that can come with light sensitivity and nausea. Many people with migraines also carry neck and shoulder tension that can be addressed.
How Dr. Joe helps
Your first visit includes a full history of your headaches: when they started, what sets them off and what helps. Dr. Joe then examines your neck, upper back and shoulders. Care may include:
- Adjustments to the neck and upper back
- Low-force Activator or Arthrostim adjusting for sensitive patients
- Soft tissue work for the muscles at the base of the skull and across the shoulders
Chiropractic care isn't a replacement for your doctor's migraine treatment. Many patients use both.
When to see a medical doctor first
Get emergency care for the worst headache of your life, a headache that peaks within a minute, a headache with fever and a stiff neck, or a headache with confusion, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or vision loss. See a doctor after any head injury, and if your headaches are new after age 50 or are changing in pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Can a chiropractor help migraines?
Chiropractic care can help with the neck and shoulder tension that often comes with migraines. Dr. Joe will be clear about what he can and can't help with, and he works alongside your medical care.
How quickly will my headaches improve?
It varies. Keeping a simple headache log between visits helps you and Dr. Joe see what's changing.
Is it safe to adjust the neck?
Neck adjustments are generally safe when performed by a trained chiropractor. Dr. Joe screens for warning signs first and offers low-force options.
